Welcome To Qigong in the Park

In a stressful world of always-on living, running in place, and non-stop dings from our phones, so many of us experience over-thinking and stuck emotions resulting in insomnia, fatigue and chronic diseases.

As health insurance and prescription coverage become increasingly unaffordable and as modern medicine pushes more and more pills, many people are turning to ancient mind-body practices like Qigong and meditation for self-healing and health maintenance.

Qigong in the Park seeks to make this traditional Chinese healing art available and accessible to all by hosting one-hour classes throughout Greater Hartford parks. Some of our classes are offered through town recreation departments at modest cost, others are held informally with a $7 contribution, no one turned away.

If you've been curious about Qigong or wanting to learn ways to access the healing energy already present in your body, come check out one of our classes on the green grass under a brilliant blue sky!

Qigong And Health

Qigong (pronounced chee-gung) is the art of feeling, cultivating and circulating qi -- your life force energy -- for vibrant health and healing.

Movements are fluid and joyful, similar to a dance, while being simple enough to be accessible for everyone. Qigong is typically practiced as a series of flowing standing postures but it can also be practiced while sitting on a chair or lying in bed. Feel free to bring a chair to the park.

Practicing qigong generates and stores energy within your body, functioning like a charger for internal organs.

Qigong is also meditation in motion —a gentle way to unlock your body’s natural capacity to heal, balance, and thrive.  It enhances the flow of oxygenated blood, balances the endocrine (hormone) system, and activates the parasympathetic nervous system.

This shifts your body from a state of "fight or flight" (stress) to a state of "rest and repair" (healing).

Qigong Heals On Four Levels

The foundational principle of physical Qigong is song, conscious relaxation. We learn to release deep-seated physical tension allowing the body’s innate wisdom to facilitate genuine, sustainable healing.

By breathing deeply, intentionally expressing flowing movements, and invoking healing sounds, we untangle emotional blocks and release energetic stagnation.  This cultivates inner peace and emotional balance, allowing the body's energy to flow freely.

Our Yi, intentional, focused mind—is the primary tool in Qigong practice. We train to develop a singular, clear internal focus to guide and nurture our Qi. This opens blocked energetic pathways and empowers us to actively direct our own wellness journey.

By aligning our internal energy with the external Qi of nature, earth, and the cosmos, we dissolve the illusion of separateness.

Feel Qigong Benefits From Day 1

If we're not feeling 100% well, chances are our dis-ease developed slowly over months and years. Qigong healing is not instantaneous - but like water slowly carving rock, it proceeds slowly, often unperceptively, over time. The only aspect we can control is whether we begin our self-healing journey today, now.

That said, we benefit from each conscious, intentional practice of Qigong and our journey often looks like this:

Immediately, Day 1
Most people notice a difference within their first 10 minutes. You will likely feel an immediate sense of mental calm, deeper and easier breathing, a drop in your heart rate, and a pleasant warmth or tingling sensation in your hands as your circulation kicks into gear.

In 2 to 3 weeks
If you practice daily for just a couple of weeks, you will start noticing cumulative benefits. You might find that you are sleeping more soundly, waking up with less morning stiffness, handling stressful situations with a calmer attitude, and moving through your day grounded, relaxed and more joyful.

Long Term
Over months of steady practice, Qigong helps build a stronger immune system, noticeably improves your balance and core strength, and helps manage chronic pain or joint issues from the inside out.

The Best Advice for Beginners
Don't overcomplicate it or wait for the "perfect" time to start. Even if you only have five minutes today to stand up, breathe deeply, and express the basic flowing arm movements —that counts as Qigong! Start small, enjoy the feeling, and let your practice grow naturally.

Frank, Qigong Instructor

Flowing Dragon Qigong

For 25+ years, Frank O’Gorman has been studying and practicing a variety of Qigong lineages especially Sunmudo, Shing-ling-mei, Sheng Zhen and Universal Tao.

Being particularly interested in how Qigong can assist in healing disease and maintaining health, Frank has synthesized the most pertinent aspects of these lineages into Flowing Dragon Qigong. This is a system of moving meditation dedicated to restoring vibrant health, accelerating natural healing, and protecting the body against disease.

In classical Eastern traditions, the Dragon is a powerful symbol of water, life-force energy, and total fluid freedom. This practice harnesses that ancient wisdom, using continuous, wave-like movements to gently clear energetic blockages, reduce chronic inflammation, and stimulate the body's innate self-healing mechanisms.

Flowing Dragon Qigong emphasizes smooth, coiling movements that gently stretch and hydrate the fascia, enhance blood circulation, and optimize the flow of lymphatic fluid. By encouraging the spine to move with supple freedom, this practice helps fortify the immune system, regulate stress hormones, and restore equilibrium to bodily systems that have been compromised by illness or injury.

Perfect for anyone navigating a health challenge or looking to maintain a lifetime of wellness, this gentle style emphasizes wu wei, effortless action, over physical exertion. Each session offers a sanctuary to step away from physical fatigue and mental burnout, shifting your physiology into a deep state of rest and repair. Flowing Dragon Qigong provides a preventive and restorative pathway, empowering you to wash away blockages, reclaim your vitality, and cultivate lasting physical resilience.

FAQ’s

  • While both are ancient Chinese mind-body practices that move energy (Qi ), Tai Chi is technically a martial art practiced as a long, continuous sequence of movements. Qigong ("Qi" = energy, "Gong" = work/cultivation) is a broader system focused entirely on health, healing, and vitality. It usually involves repeating a few flowing movements, making it much easier for beginners to learn and pick up quickly.

  • Absolutely. Qigong is low-impact and highly adaptable. The movements are designed to be gentle on the joints and can be modified for any fitness level. In fact, many movements can be practiced while sitting down or even visualizing them mentally if standing is difficult. It’s about relaxation and flow, not straining or flexibility.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows you to move your arms and bend your knees freely (like shorts, swimming trunks, sweatpants, leggings, a loose t-shirt or none at all.) For footwear, your bare feet are best to connect to the Earth's energy. You may prefer to wear socks or flat, thin-soled sneakers.
